HAWAIIAN PERFORMERS TO BENEFIT MEDIA TRAINING FOR LOCAL YOUTH Saturday, May 14th, 2016   7:30 p.m. On Saturday, May 14th, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., Bay Area Hawaiian musicians Pūlama and Pili Moreno, along with dancers from Sausalito’s Hula Manu ‘Ō‘ō, will perform a benefit concert for the East Bay Media Center, whose Emmy- and Peabody-award-winning producers provide training in film production for Bay Area youth. The concert will take place at the East Bay Media Center’s performance space at 1939 Addison Street in the downtown Berkeley Arts District. Tickets are $10 in advance through Brown Paper Tickets or $15 at the door.  brownpapertickets.com/event/2507814 The duo Pūlama has recorded two well-received albums of traditional and original Hawaiian music and has performed with Hawaiian musicians ranging from Cyril Pahinui to the Bay Area’s own Patrick Landeza. Their close harmonies, featuring Jim Romano’s masterful slack-key guitar and rough-smooth tenor and Paula Rudman’s pure vocals, have won them a dedicated Bay Area following. Pili Moreno is a traditional healer, teacher and ceremonialist as well as a gifted singer, songwriter and guitarist who has performed with many musicians and hula groups in Hawai‘i and on the mainland, including Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winners Darlene Ahuna and Uluwehi Guerrero. Pili and Pūlama will be accompanied by dancers from the award-winning Hula Manu ‘Ō‘ō, which has been delighting Bay Area audiences for thirty years with its vibrant depictions of traditional Hawaiian stories. Artistic Director Pua Saunders trained with the legendary hula master, chanter, and Hawaiian culture bearer George Na‘ope.
